25th February 2012 - Upcycling Workshop for Asian International School
Upcycling is the process of designing something of better quality or a higher environmental value with waste materials or products, negating the need to buy new materials or products. Not only do upcycled products reduce waste by giving material and products a second purpose, we can explore the poetic and inherit beauty of each product or material. This allows for continuous exploration of new and exciting aesthetics not yet realized and adds to the full gamut of the designed environment.
Below you can see what can be created from everyday waste materials.

9th of August 2011: Students of Raffles Institute of Higher Education Shine at 'Pro-ses' Fashion Exhibition
‘Proh-ses’ was a group exhibition, which brought together a diverse range of work from students enrolled in the Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing and Management programmes at Raffles Institute of Higher Education, Colombo. As the title suggests, ‘proh-ses’ brings together examples of work which demonstrate on multiple levels, the diversity of skills imparted to the students at Raffles. With these skills, students are encouraged to explore their own creative language through a wide variety of processes learned throughout their studies. These processes can be theoretical or practical and range through critical thinking skills, conceptualization, research, sketching, photography, sewing, marketing, draping, drafting, history of costume, computer rendering and portfolio building. Fashion Lecturer, Ms. Andreea Lonhardt, states “Rather than being purely academic, the Fashion Design programme at Raffles operates more like a design studio - where there are many practical elements taught to support creative ideas” says Andreea. “Students are exposed to specific practical skills which they need to learn, in order to design and fabricate garments to ‘Couture’ standard - preparing them for entering into a billion dollar industry”. “Ths exhibition is therefore extremely important, so that students may showcase their work to a wider audience at an early stage in their design education” she adds.
According to Academic Director, Associate Professor Julie Ross “The work on display reflects these diverse components of fashion design education – where there is evidence of innovation, individuality, experimentation, investigation and application”. “The ‘proh-ses’ is critical. Without it – there would be no journey and no end result” she concludes.
